The William M. Trotter School was founded in 1969, and celebrated its fiftieth birthday this year. It was the first magnet school in Boston and the second in the United States. From its inception, it was de-segregated and highly selected by families. It was known in the past for having a strong performing arts program. Because of a confluence of factors, the Trotter School entered a period of severe decline in the late 1980s in terms of student achievement. The school experienced a significant decline in enrollment and was not among parents’ first choices.
The school completed extensive work to develop partnerships with parents, families, and organizations to achieve the goals in its redesign plan. In 2013 the William Monroe Trotter was removed from the label as an underperforming school and became a Level 1 school. We serve students from Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain, South Boston, and Hyde Park.
