Prostate Cancer Rages in Black Communities SPONSORED BY THE PROSTATE HEALTH EDUCATION NETWORK By Thomas A. Farrington President, the Prostate Health Education Network E stimates from the American Cancer Society indicate an alarming 80% increase in prostate cancer diagnoses from 2019 to 2025. This represents the most significant increase among all major cancers, with Black men being particularly affected. They are diagnosed at a rate more than 70% higher than that of white men and have more than twice the mortality rate. All Black men are at high risk for this dis- ease, and those with a family history of prostate cancer face an even greater risk. The Prostate Health Education Network is actively addressing this prostate can- Thomas A. Farrington cer crisis through community rallies across the country. These events feature a month-long radio and media awareness campaign, free PSA screenings, and educational programs. Recent rallies oc- curred in Charlotte, NC, in January, and Dallas, TX, in February. The next Prostate Cancer Community Rally is scheduled for March in Boston, culminating at Twelfth Baptist Church on March 29th. I am truly shocked by the high numbers from the PSA screening results in Charlotte and Dallas. This means many of these men may be diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which is no longer curable. I want people to be alarmed about this disease and act, starting with a simple PSA blood test, which can be lifesaving. Early detection is crucial in combating pros- tate cancer. Men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer have a remarkable 10-year survival rate of over 98%. However, the 10-year survival rate drops to 18-35% for those diag- nosed at later stages. The Boston Prostate Cancer Community Rally will be held on March 29th at Twelfth Baptist Church (160 Warren St, Boston, MA). It is free and open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The rally will include free PSA screenings and educational sessions. All attendees will be entered into a drawing for four Boston Celtics tickets, a seven-night stay in Las Ve- gas, and American Express gift cards. Pre-registration is available at Rapcancer.com.
